I find paint and painting interesting and amazing. One of the
early memories I have is about a boy named Tom Sawyer in Hannibal, MissourI. He talked his way into immortality as his fictional friends
splash whitewash across a fence in Mark Twains story.
My wife is a painting machine. She can make a simple room look
like a room in a mansion. Why, she even painted the fence in our
front yard and made it look new again.
Painting a fence is far more than cosmetic. It protects the wood
from rot and insects; it tells the neighbors you care about the looks
of your property.
Then there’s the painted faces of the world’s beautiful people.
Make up can well hide the bumps and blemishes and it sometimes
also hides the fear of getting old or not being very pretty.
I don’t know very much about painting faces, but during my
fence painting days I discovered that paint briefly covers up the
present and postpones the inevitable. However, rust and rot will
win in the end. The fences fall down, the faces grow old and the
painted faces lose their teeth.
There are some things paint just won’t hide. The one sure
thing in life is change. Embrace that change.
Accept the passing of time. It’s all part of the journey.
God is in control.
